Missoula Peace Park
In 2007, we became aware of 4.5 acres of land for sale on the south face of the North Hills. We immediately thought it would be a great place for another visible sign of peace, as many people missed the old Missoula Peace Sign that came down in 2001. The idea garnered much support from our members who donated the money to help us purchase the land. In time for the International Day of Peace that year, a peace sign made of white sheets and towels held down by painted rocks graced the hillside, and our Peace Park became a reality.
We have placed 4 benches there, created an amphitheater for small events like yoga or picnics in the park. There is a bell to ring out over the community, a Buddha donated to us by the Rocky Mountain Buddhist Center and of course our peace sign. We offer it to the Missoula community as a gift to encourage time for reflection and peace. A log book records the many meaningful visits Missoulians have made over the years.
Volunteers tend the park by pulling weeds, tending occasional plantings, placing stone of remembrance, walking the trails through and around it and from time to time repairing and replenishing the peace sign. The park is an easy .3 mile walk from the trailhead at Waterworks Hill off of Greenough Dr. Just follow the sign! We encourage you to visit and spend some time there reflecting on what peace means in your life.
