Farming System and the Ecosystem of the Planet and People
It's no secret that food distribution is the backbone of civilization. We live in a system that seeks to maximize profitability, which makes food as an industry attractive, as demand will never go down for a population that requires three meals a day. With supply and demand, the idea goes that food is made as cheaply as possible, and gets to the mouths of the most people. A system that might seem elegant and simple at first, and at a cursory glance, it seems to be true. Few people starve to death in the modern age, relatively speaking. However it's not hard to see where this starts to fall apart. From health issues from eating only cheap food to the titanic impact our modern farming system has had on the ecosystem of the planet the issues with the mainstream food industries are well known. It is with this in mind that those of us interested in both the physical health of our most economically vulnerable community members and on the health of our ecosystem, we must advocate and support not only organic, healthy foods but local foods.
