Missoula Peace Sign

How many of you remember the old Missoula Peace Sign that stood in the North Hills for 18 years? In the time that I have been at the Peace Center, it has been the subject of many conversations, questions, even a movie -- and yes, hopes. Symbols have value because they give vision to things that are abstract and invisible. And many Missoulians over the years saw hope when they viewed the sign overlooking their city. I hadn’t been at the Center long before someone said, “I wish we could get it back on the hill.” Fifteen years later, we have a plan – not to put it on the hill but to mount it on the blank wall behind the Peace Center. Many of you likely donated to help make this possible. And we got a generous grant from the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula as well as permits from the city of Missoula. So it seems like this hope will become a reality this spring – 20 years after it came down from the hill. I’m reaching out to see if you would like to help us reimagine the Peace Sign in our community. Of course, we could use some more donations, but more importantly, we are looking for help to work on the following committees:

  • Fundraising

  • Event Planning

  • Construction

  • Media Outreach

Send me an email if you are interested in working with us. We have a few months and many hands will make this so much better. After the year we’ve been through, seeing this symbol of our hopes become a reality will be a bright spot for the future. And while you’re at it, we’d love to hear your stories and memories about the Peace sign. I’ll be waiting to hear from you.
